Fashion is one of the most essential elements in terms of having a better lifestyle. Nowadays, people can easily tell how your personality is, simply from the way you dress yourself up. Because your dress can change people's perspectives on you. What you wear is what you represent. But then again, fashion is also a way to express yourself. There are no fixed rules of what color your clothes should be, what material your trousers should be made of, how your outfit should actually fit you, etc. Eventually, it's only a matter of taste, and people do have different tastes, innit.

Here, I want to talk about some fashion mistakes that I made in the past, and I wish I stopped sooner. Some points mentioned below are based on the suitability to my body type and personal trial-error experience. Before I start, these are just my personal opinions. There are no right and wrong statements that you should agree with, so if you don't think the same with what I write here, it's not a big deal though. Feel free to let me know how you think down below.

Now, let's jump into the topic.

1. Not Keeping It Simple

Simple Outfit Idea

Simplicity is the main key of building a good style. My mistakes in terms of keeping things simple is that I didn't invest to basic items, while the first things you must do in order to have a great sense of style is to have these basics in your wardrobe.

Instead of wearing a t-shirt with a lot of graphics or logos on it, or with a highly-saturated unsuitable color, you can change it to a neutral-colored plain t-shirt. Instead of wearing a pair of sneakers with a lot of colors combined on it, you can start off with a pair of minimal white sneaks. I will talk more about the most basic items you need in your closets in the next post, this can also be for my learning material as well, though.

Wearing basics may be boring for some, but basics is the most timeless look you can pull off. So when you are in doubt, pulling off the basics can be the best decision for you.

2. Not Understanding The Body Type

Fitting Process

Every person has a different type of body, innit. The mistakes that I made in terms of body type was that I didn't care too much about what kind of top that is suitable to my body.

Here are some simple tips for skinny guys out there (cause we have the same body type tbf):

  • You can wear light-colored t-shirt

  • The best choice is to wear long-sleeved

  • Outerwear is your best companion

By understanding your body type, you can analyze what type of clothes that can make you look great.

3. Not Understanding Color-Blocking

Color-blocking is a method of wearing multiple solid color in an outfit (Click For Full Article). The mistakes that I made when it comes to colors was not giving a single damn about combining the right colors, so that my outfit looked sloppy most of the time.

One simple guideline you can follow is that you can wear darker color for the top and lighter one for bottom, or you can reverse them two, in order to create contrast in your outfit. Also, neutral colors like black and white are essentials, you don't want to miss them in your outfit as neutrals are great foundations to a great outfit.

4. Too Much Statement Pieces

Formalwear Accesories

Statement piece is usually an interesting or eye-catching piece from your outfit (Click For Full Article). Mostly, statement piece can be accesories, t-shirt, or outerwear. My mistakes in terms of statement piece was more to combining these attractive stuffs in a look, kind of like combining two unsuitable colors. One exact moment that I remember is when I wore an orange graphic tee with red training jacket and a dark blue jeans on the bottom. That was just sloppy and unstylish.

The best way that you can do to avoid the same mistake is to make sure you don't use too much items as your statement pieces. My preference is to use one statement piece, no more than that. If you wear rings, you can wear up to two rings on each ring finger or pinkie. With using one item only, that's just enough to make it a game-changer to your outfit, plus you can keep your outfit simple but still capable of stealing the show.

5. Wearing Fake Products

Hanging White Sneakers

When I was in my college days, I was obsessed with having a highly-branded sneakers. I tried my best to get one of those brands until then I bought a pair of them online. And as you guessed first, yes it was fake at all. At that time, I didn't even give a damn about whether the products are fake or not. The only thing that I thought about was only that the product is way cheaper than the original one. From now I realized that I shouldn't buy them.

Wearing fake products is kind of like a form of disrespect to the creators of those products, as they might invest so much for the best material to create those products, and we as the consumer, most of the time, don't acknowledge it that much. If you're on a budget, simply never buy a fake product. Nowadays, there are so many local products that offer proven quality with varied friendly price. Those can absolutely be your best alternative, as well as supporting local production.

I hope those five points can help you to avoid the same mistakes like I did in style, and this can be some guideline if you want to start looking better from your outfit. If there is any suggestion, feel free to let me know down below.
